Abstract. Base isolation is a modern strategy to decrease the effects of earthquakes on buildings of high significance. The general principle is that the structure is decoupled from the horizontal components of the earthquake ground motion by interposing a layer with low lateral stiffness between the structure and the foundation. One of the major devices to apply seismic isolation is Friction Pendulum Systems, which use the characteristics of a pendulum to lengthen the natural period of the…

Correct treatment of rotation of sliding surfaces in a kinematic model of the triple friction pendulum bearing
This paper addresses the treatment of the rotation of the internal components of the triple friction pendulum (TFP) isolation bearing in a numerical model previously presented by the authors. The
Spherical sliding isolation bearings with adaptive behavior: Theory
The principles of operation and force–displacement relationships of three novel spherical sliding isolation bearings are developed in this paper. These bearings are completely passive devices, yet
Teflon Bearings in Base Isolation II: Modeling
A mathematical model of the factional behavior of Teflon sliding bearings for conditions of interest in base isolation is developed. The calibration of the model is based on extensive experimental
Achieving reliable seismic performance enhancement using multi‐stage friction pendulum isolators
An objective in the design of seismically isolated structures is the selection of isolator properties so that performance enhancements are reliably achieved over a range of excitations and
Behaviour of the double concave Friction Pendulum bearing
The double concave Friction Pendulum (DCFP) bearing is an adaptation of the well‐known single concave Friction Pendulum bearing. The principal benefit of the DCFP bearing is its capacity to
