How Thick Should Outdoor Tiles Be?

Historically, porcelain tiles were between 9mm and 12mm thick. While this is fine for indoor spaces, outdoor tiles need to be a bit thicker. Why? Because outdoor tiles have to withstand harsh weather conditions - as well as shoes, heavy garden furniture, and all sorts of other challenges.

All of the outdoor tiles available from PrimaPorcelain are 20mm thick. This extra thickness gives the tiles outstanding durability and helps them to last for years no matter what life throws at them.

Our 20mm thick outdoor tiles are suitable for all sorts of external areas - including gardens, patios, driveways, roof terraces, balconies, swimming pools and even public spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are porcelain tiles a good choice for outdoor spaces?

Yes, porcelain is a fantastic choice of material for outdoor tiles because it has a very low porosity. This means that the tiles absorb very little water, making them highly weather resistant.

Our 20mm thick porcelain paving slabs are specifically designed for outdoor use. These outdoor tiles are exceptionally durable, and the slip-resistant texture makes them a safe choice for exterior spaces.

Can you install outdoor tiles over concrete?

Yes, it's possible to install our outdoor tiles over concrete as long as you invest in the right patio substructure. Here at PrimaPorcelain, we offer two easy porcelain paving installation methods: our adjustable pedestal supports and the innovative Easy-Frame patio frame.

Both of these installation methods allow you to install your outdoor tiles over the top of existing concrete without the need for cement or adhesives. If you are unsure about the best way to install your new outdoor tiles, feel free to contact the PrimaPorcelain team.

Will my outdoor tiles become slippery when wet?

No - PrimaPorcelain's 20mm thick outdoor tiles are specifically designed to provide superb slip resistance in all weather conditions. To help you make an informed purchase, every tile we sell has a 'Grip Factor' rating ranging from 1 to 5. Anything with a rating of 4 or 5 may be considered suitable for outdoor use.

Rectified Tiles

All of our outdoor tiles are rectified. This means that every paving slab you receive will be exactly same size, with all angles measuring precisely 90 degrees – so you can rest assured that your paved area will look perfect once it’s completed!

Colour Variation

Some of our external paving products have a higher shade variation rating than others. Look for a high rating (V4) if you want a colourful surface that encompasses a variety of shades, or a low rating (V2) if you want your outdoor porcelain tiles to have a consistent colour and pattern.

Textured Finish

All of our outdoor tiles have a textured / grip finish. Not only does this look great – especially if you’re looking to emulate the organic appeal of natural stone paving – it also provides additional grip, keeping your outside area safe and slip-resistant.

No Cement Necessary: Dry-Install Your Outdoor Tiles

One of the greatest things about our outdoor slabs is the fact that they can be ‘dry-installed’ without any cement or adhesive whatsoever. This is achieved using our innovative pedestal support system, which provides adequate support for the paving slabs without the need for any cement. Our outdoor porcelain tiles can also be installed using the Easy-Frame system, or with a traditional cement mix and bonding agent.
